SEALANTS
WHAT ARE SEALANTS?
Dental sealants are a very effective way to protect your teeth from decay. A sealant is a thin coating of plastic resin that is painted onto the chewing surface of the teeth, typically the molars and premolars. These teeth have deep grooves called pits and fissures, where more than 75% of tooth decay begins. The sealant seals out these grooves, protecting them from bacteria, acids, and food debris that lead to decay. The dental sealant also creates a smooth, easy-to-clean surface on the tooth so your daily brushing is more effective.
DO I NEED SEALANTS?
Drs. Kim, Han, Cook, and Cho most often recommend dental sealants in Houston, Texas, for children as soon as their permanent molars erupt. This is usually between the ages of 6 and 12 years. The teeth are especially prone to cavities during the ages of 6-16 years, so it is important to have sealants in place. Sealants may also benefit some adults whose teeth do not already have decay or restorations. When you visit Red Bird Family Dental, our dentists will help you determine whether you or your child needs sealants. We invite you to contact us today to learn more and to set up your next appointment.
